Everyone knows swimming benefits the body, but did you know that it also works wonders for the mind? Spending even just a few minutes a day in a pool can make you look and feel better. Here are six ways swimming can make you happy.

1. Soak up endorphins
Ever wonder why your avid jogger friend is always so chipper? It’s because she’s high on endorphins, which are happy chemicals your brain releases when you exercise. According to Medicine Net, endorphins are similar to uppers because they work with the opiate receptors to trick you into thinking your workout isn’t as painful. Further, endorphins lead to euphoric feelings and they even boost your immune system!

2. Boost confidence
Feeling glum? According to The Huffington Post, all it takes is 20 minutes of exercise to turn your mood around. The quick workout can improve your mindset for up to 12 hours. If you paid an hourly rate to be happier, it’d cost you milliseconds of movement – something everyone can afford.

3. Enjoy social perks
If you enjoy swimming with your spouse, kids and friends, then you’re well on your way to happiness. Researchers have long claimed that spending time with others – especially loved ones – can make you feel happier.

4. Have a brighter outlook
Even fatal optimists seek ways to be happier. They should look no further than in their own backyards. Bucknell University explained that water exercise helps you develop a positive attitude.

5. Escape worry
When you’re in the water you have the chance to shed your worries. Fully focus on your breast stroke, or whatever swim technique you’re trying to improve, and it’ll take your mind off of work, relationships and bills. Make the pool your sanctuary!

6. Sleep sounder
The more you exercise your mind and body, the easier it will be to drift off to sleep at night, improving your chances of getting a good night’s sleep. The American Psychology Society explained that 60 to 90 additional minutes of sleep a night can strengthen the immune system, people’s ability to concentrate, memory and risk of getting into an accident – all reasons to be happy. Get into a rinse, lather, repeat style cycle to feel happier every single day.
