Urrak: an insider's guide to Goa's other favourite drink

Urrak (or Urak) is Goa's beloved, seasonal, first-distillation spirit made from fermented cashew apple juice, known as a fruity, refreshing summer cooler served lightly mixed with soda, lime, salt, and chili, offering a gentler, less potent alternative to its stronger cousin, Feni, and vanishing with the first monsoon rains.

What Is Urrak?

Goan spirit: A traditional alcoholic beverage unique to Goa, India.

From cashew apples: Made from the fermented juice (niro) of cashew fruit.

First distillation: It's the first, single distillation, making it lighter and fruitier than Feni, which is the second distillation.

Seasonal: Available primarily from March to May, disappearing with the onset of the monsoon.

How Do You Enjoy Urrak?

Cocktail mix: Often mixed with soda, a splash of lemon, a pinch of salt, and a slit green chili.

Served chilled: Best enjoyed fresh and cold as a summer cooler.

Accompaniments: Pairs well with spicy Goan snacks or raw mango.

Fruity & mild: Has a strong fruity aroma and is less pungent than Feni.

Low alcohol: Lower alcohol content (around 15-20%) than Feni (40-45%).

Short shelf life: Must be consumed fresh due to its low shelf life.
