India's vast coastline offers a diverse range of seafood and coastal cuisine. Here are a few Indian coastal recipes that all of us here at The Beach Company absolutely love love love! 

1. Goan Fish Curry (Goa)

Ingredients:

  • 500g fish (pomfret, kingfish, or any firm white fish)
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 4-5 dried red chilies
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 6-8 garlic cloves
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Tamarind pulp (small lime-sized ball)
  • Salt to taste
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions:

  1. Grind coconut, red chilies, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, garlic, and turmeric to a fine paste.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, sauté chopped onions until golden brown.
  3. Add the ground paste and cook for a few minutes.
  4. Add tamarind pulp, salt, and curry leaves. Stir well.
  5. Add fish pieces, coat them with the masala, and cook until fish is done.
  6. Serve with steamed rice.

2. Malabar Prawn Curry (Kerala)

Ingredients:

  • 500g prawns, cleaned
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 onion, finely sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Grind coconut and fennel seeds to a fine paste.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan, sauté sliced onions until golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste, tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook until oil separates.
  4. Add the coconut paste and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Add cleaned prawns, curry leaves, and salt. Cook until prawns are done.
  6. Serve with steamed rice or appam.

3. Mangalorean Crab Curry (Karnataka)

Ingredients:

  • 2 crabs, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Grind coconut, mustard seeds, and fenugreek seeds to a fine paste.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan, add chopped onions, and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add tomatoes, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and cook until tomatoes are soft.
  4. Add the ground paste, tamarind pulp, and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Add cleaned crab pieces, curry leaves, and salt. Cook until the crabs are done.
  6. Serve with steamed rice.
