BEACH OF THE WEEK

Mira Beach, Pulau Perhentian, Malaysia

Each week The Beach Company brings you one of the best beaches in the world as our Beach of the Week and this week’s best beach is one of Malaysia’s most beautiful beaches.

BEACH: Mira Beach, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

WHERE: On the western side of the Kecil island (the smaller of the two Perhentian Islands), Mira Beach occupies its very own small secluded bay and is backed by dense jungle. There are no roads on the islands so you’ll have to unleash the explorer within and take on the jungle if you wish to stray from the beach…or alternatively you could just do what we did and hop in a water taxi. So much easier.

WHY: Quite possibly one of the most peaceful places on the planet, this is the kind of beach people write about in romantic novels. Think bathwater-warm seas, a dramatic Jurassic park backdrop, and of course, the obligatory bleached white grains to stretch out on and soak up the sun.

HOW: Around an hour’s boat ride over from mainland Malaysia (the jetty at Kuala Besut to be exact), ask to be dropped off on Mira Beach itself to avoid a short, although admittedly slightly hair-raising, trek through the jungle from nearby Coral Bay. It’s easier than it sounds, promise.

H2O TONE: Forget-me-not blue

SAND TONE: White meringue

STAY: In one of the four wooden beach shacks, or up in the hills in a stilted chalet. We are talking more rustic than luxurious here though so if you’d rather retain your creature comforts simply head across the water to neighbouring island Besar and check into a deluxe beachside suite at The Perhentian Island Resort.

WHEN: East coast peninsula Malaysia receives heavy rainfall from Nov – Feb so jet off from mid March – Oct to ensure sunny skies.
